Washington Today (9-22-23): Speaker McCarthy tries new strategy with federal gov't shutdown looming

House Rules Committee meets to consider the rules for next week's House debate on four FY2024 spending bills, a new strategy from Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) after multiple attempts to pass a short-term government funding bill to prevent a shutdown after September 30, when the next fiscal year begins, failed this week, after a few Republicans who support spending cuts rebelled. President Joe Biden creates the first ever federal office on gun violence prevention and asks Vice President Kamala Harris to lead it.. He said the move is needed because Congress has not acted on what he calls "commonsense" steps to curb gun violence. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), chair of the Foreign Relations Committee, and his wife, are indicted on charges they took bribes of cash, gold bars and a luxury car to use his influence to benefit the government of Egypt They both deny the allegations.. United Auto Workers expand their strike against General Motors and Stellantis, but not Ford. UAW President Shawn Fain says Ford has made some progress meeting the union's demands for better pay and benefits, but as for GM and Stellantis, he says they "will need some pushing."
