The Houthis claim they have attacked a group of US ships, scoring a “direct hit” against a warship. This is the first time the Houthis have claimed to have successfully attacked a US warship. The US says two cargo ships and a US Navy escort came under missile attack, but that no damage was reported. The Houthis have been attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea for weeks. They claim they are supporting Hamas in Gaza by only targeting ships bound for Israel. But the US and UK said the attacks are ‘indiscriminate’ and threaten all international shipping through the Suez Canal. A US-led joint international naval task force is patrolling the Red Sea in an attempt to limit further attacks. After the most recent Houthi attack a few days ago, the US and UK launched a second wave of strikes across Yemen. There are fears that the two sides risk being locked into a cycle of retaliatory attacks, that may further escalate the conflict.
