Washington Today (1-25-24): U.S. economy grows at a 3.3% pace in Q4 2023, beating expectations

Commerce Dept says the U.S. economy grew by an annualized 3.3% in the fourth quarter of 2023…. beating most expectations by a substantial amount. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen talks about the health of the economy, and the American people's perceptions of it, at the Economic Club of Washington. President Joe Biden also discusses the GDP report as he announces infrastructure grants in Superior, Wisconsin. More uncertainty is surrounding U.S. border security negotiations in the Senate, which were to be linked to U.S. aid to Ukraine, after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) reportedly says the two issues may be separated because Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump would rather not have an agreement and use the issue in the campaign. Donald Trump testifies in the defamation trial against him brought by columnist E Jean Carroll. Former Trump White House adviser Peter Navarro is sentenced to four months in jail for defying a subpoena from the U.S. House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. His lawyers have already filed an appeal. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VA) says the Health Committee he chairs will vote on subpoenas for two pharmaceutical company CEO's to testify about high drug prices. Senate Banking Committee holds a hearing on the National Flood Insurance Program, whose latest in a long line of temporary authorizations expires in just over a week.
