Archaeologists have discovered a fresco that might be the ancestor of the Italian pizza in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. Although it lacks classic pizza ingredients such as tomato and mozzarella, Pompeii's archaeological director Gabriel Zuchtriegel said it could be a distant relative of the modern dish. Pompeii, destroyed by an eruption of the Mount Vesuvius volcano nearly 2,000 years ago, is only about 15 miles away from Naples, the modern-day home of the Italian pizza, a Unesco-protected food.
