A new theory suggests that supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies may be a source of dark energy, the mysterious force driving the accelerating expansion of the universe. In particular, the growth rate of these black holes has been found to align with a phenomenon predicted by Einstein’s theory of gravity, which could potentially account for the accelerating expansion of the universe attributed to dark energy. The conclusion was made by studying nine billion years of black hole evolution. This is the first observational evidence that black holes actually contain vacuum energy and that they are ‘coupled’ to the expansion of the Universe However, it’s important to note that this is still a developing area of research, and more data and analysis are needed to confirm this hypothesis. The exact nature of dark energy and its sources remain a topic of active investigation in the field of cosmology.
