On the season premiere of CUNY Laureates, we begin a new series on MacArthur Fellowship winners from the City University of New York. First, we get a crash course in the MacArthur Foundation’s so-called “Genius Grant”, a no-strings-attached fellowship for academics and creatives across every section of society. Ben Katchor explores the obscure and fleeting corners of New York through the art of the comic strip. And Ada Louise Huxtable writes passionately about every citizen’s right to “good architecture”. Guest: Ben Katchor, Cartoonist Tape Date: 08/17/2023 First Air Date: 09/25/2023 CUNY Laureates is a documentary series about the lives and achievements of CUNY graduates who went on to win major awards in their respective fields. By reintroducing these exceptional minds to younger audiences, we hope to emphasize the value of a high-quality public education and demonstrate how it can transcend all social and political boundaries, even to this day. In the first season, we honor our outstanding alumni by profiling 13 CUNY graduates who have received Academia’s greatest honor, the Nobel Prize.
